Councils don’t want large amounts of water running onto roads and into drains, where it can cause localised flooding, so they favour permeable surfaces such as block paving, cobbles and resin bound. With tarmac and standard or patterned concrete, you may need drains or soakaways to stop water reaching the road, which can add to the cost.

It depends partly on where your drive is: one in the open, away from trees, lawns and borders, collects less moss, leaves and seeds. Most driveways are low maintenance when new, but after a year or two you’ll notice dirt and algae building up. Tarmac, resin and patterned concrete are the easiest to keep clean. Block paving and cobbles just need a regular clean with a suitable cleaner; avoid pressure washing, which can dislodge the jointing and let weeds take hold.

A resin bound driveway is very low maintenance, as weeds and algae struggle to take hold. Block paving needs more regular cleaning and weed treatment between the blocks, though it’s an easy job if done little and often. Block paving can be laid exactly as you want, mixing colours for a unique design, and if a block gets damaged, replacing it is much simpler than patching resin.
